Letter From the Editor- Edition 127

If You Could

During a coffee with a very successful CEO recently he talked about the work that he was doing for his charity foundation. He said he was working with a hospital that he wanted to help and contribute to the health and welfare of the children. Being a very successful businessman he was a 'big picture' thinker. Unfortunately, the people he was speaking with were not big picture thinkers. They were 'yeah, but' people. They were used to bureaucracy, politics and barriers. Every time he made a step forward to help them they found a barrier or a negative or a reason why it couldn't happen. He stopped them immediately and said "just suspend judgement". Suspend judgement for a second, what would you like and how much would it cost? They then went on to elaborate how much they needed to do their venture. They said here is a perfect world and we would need a million dollars. He responded with right leave that to me I'll find the million...and he did. But having to say suspend judgement to others and/or to the fat bastard in your own mind so that it doesn't steal your creative mojo is a really good way of consciously and unconsciously putting to rest the judgement that has been put into us since childhood. You get what you focus on and when you focus on all the things that might go wrong or the reasons it cant happen you never will. The success of this CEO was due to the fact that he was a big picture thinker and he was able to suspend judgement in the first instance to build new opportunities, challenge the status quo and cause disruption. This is the true way to build a successful business and to create successful, innovative mojo in your own mind. Next time you have a great idea and the fat bastards start giving you all the reasons why it cant happen or you're running a brainstorm and some people in the room start to bring up the negatives before you have actually begun the creative part of the session just say 'suspend judgement'. Suspend judgement to the group and in some cases you literally have to say suspend judgement to the fat bastard in your own mind.

Entertainment

Tweet Seats

This idea is definitely a sign of the times. A theatre venue in the United States is offering Tweet Seats for people to live tweet during performances. Normally located in the back row to avoid disrupting others who are there enjoying the show the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra has set aside particular seats for those addicts who want to tweet. It would be terribly annoying sitting next to somebody who is happily tweeting whilst you are trying to enjoy the show. However it's kind of clever for the symphony orchestra providing that the tweets are positive, as you have somebody marketing and promoting your product live to air. The tweet seats allows users to comment on the show and share their thoughts with their followers. It is a pretty clever way of the show interacting with a community outside of the theatre. I guess that there is no way that you are going to beat the tweet so you might as well join them.

Automobile

Siri Starts the Car

Siri is the amazing voice activated software that is accompanying the latest Apple iPhone. Using voice commands you can set appointments, send texts and retrieve all sorts of information all by addressing your voice to Siri, your personal concierge in your iPhone. Now via innovative thinking Brandon Fiquett has set up his Siri app on his iPhone to start and stop his car. Essentially he is using Siri 'hack' to control his vehicle with his voice. Fiquett explains that the command is sent from Siri to a viper server then relayed via cellular connection to the car. The car then broadcasts an update via RF to the key chain remote. Apparently the hack can also lock and unlock the car and also pop open the truck all through voice activation via Siri. We love this idea because it certainly unlocks the possibilities of what Siri and similar apps will be able to do in our everyday world in years to come.

Design

A Table Thats Got Game

Ping Pong is an excellent sport and its said to be one of the best sports to foster creativity and innovation which is probably why you find a lot of ping pong tables in advertising agencies and promotions companies. The only downside is that they take up a lot of space. Maybe Axel Ybergs table is a solution. It looks like a work of art with polished wood finishing, glass cut-out centre and intricate metal detail but when you take a good look at it...its just a ping pong table. It can also be used as a dining table or a spacious work desk if you just take the net part off. This is not only a great innovation but also terribly cool. Its made from seven species of exotic wood including black walnut, cherry and holly. The ornate metal trimmings are made from re-claimed plumbing pipes and fittings and aircraft cable. This is a brilliant concept for any work space or home environment for someone who wants to work hard then play hard. Do an hour of work, clear the desk, have a game for a while, freshen up the mind, get the blood flowing and allow the subconscious to work before putting away the paddles and getting back to it. Great innovation. The name of it? The Pingtuated Equilibripong.

Outdoors

Camp Candy

I'm sure most of you have been camping at one time or another. We have all seen those green or beige tents and have all struggled with erecting them efficiently. You an imagine the scene when somebody was sitting next to their tent while camping, the fire raging and a stubby in hand when they looked at their tent and said "I could do something with that". Introducing Field Candy an exciting new design-lead brand of tents. They are colourful, creative, fun and bring your camping site to life with unexpected designs that you wouldn't normally see in a camp ground. The creators of Field Candy believe that your tent should say something about who is inside it. If these tents float your boat they have worldwide shipping and there is sure to be a unique design to suit your personality.

Housing

The Skate House

Although still only a prototype this would have to be one of the coolest thoughts in house development that we have seen for a while. Called the PAS Skate House. It’s a house that has been completely designed around their passion being skateboarding. The house is currently being built in Malibu, California with the idea in mind that you can skateboard on any surface in any part of the house, indoors or out. All the space is skate-able as the ground becomes the wall then ceiling in one continuous surface. Even the furniture is skate-able.
