If You Could
During a coffee with a very successful CEO recently he talked about the work that he was doing for his charity foundation. He said he was working with a hospital that he wanted to help and contribute to the health and welfare of the children. Being a very successful businessman he was a 'big picture' thinker. Unfortunately, the people he was speaking with were not big picture thinkers. They were 'yeah, but' people. They were used to bureaucracy, politics and barriers. Every time he made a step forward to help them they found a barrier or a negative or a reason why it couldn't happen. He stopped them immediately and said "just suspend judgement". Suspend judgement for a second, what would you like and how much would it cost? They then went on to elaborate how much they needed to do their venture. They said here is a perfect world and we would need a million dollars. He responded with
right leave that to me I'll find the million...and he did. But having to say suspend judgement to others and/or to the fat bastard in your own mind so that it doesn't steal your creative mojo is a really good way of consciously and unconsciously putting to rest the judgement that has been put into us since childhood. You get what you focus on and when you focus on all the things that might go wrong or the reasons it cant happen you never will. The success of this CEO was due to the fact that he was a big picture thinker and he was able to suspend judgement in the first instance to build new opportunities, challenge the status quo and cause disruption. This is the true way to build a successful business and to create successful, innovative mojo in your own mind. Next time you have a great idea and the fat bastards start giving you all the reasons why it cant happen or you're running a
brainstorm and some people in the room start to bring up the negatives before you have actually begun the creative part of the session just say 'suspend judgement'. Suspend judgement to the group and in some cases you literally have to say suspend judgement to the fat bastard in your own mind.
