Letter From the Editor- Edition 119

What is a Workout?

A workout is 25% perspiration and 75% determination. Stated another way it is one part physical exertion and three parts self discipline. Doing it is easy, once you get started. A workout makes you better today than you were yesterday. It strengthens the body, relaxes the mind and toughens the spirit. When you workout regularly your problems diminish and your confidence grows. A workout is a personal triumph over laziness and procrastination. It is the badge of a winner - the mark of an organized, goal-orientated person who has taken charge of his or her own destiny. A workout is a wise use of time and an investment in excellence. It is a way of preparing for life's challenges and proving to yourself that you have what it takes to do what is necessary. A workout is a key that helps unlock the door to opportunity and success. Hidden within each of us is an extraordinary force. Physical and mental fitness are triggers that can release it. A workout is a form of rebirth. When you finish a good workout you don't simply feel better, you FEEL BETTER ABOUT YOURSELF.

By Land or Sea

Caravanning is pretty huge in Australia and you can imagine the scene of a bloke set up with his caravan somewhere on the Great Ocean Road, with his esky, awning, deckchair, stubby in hand, looking out at the ocean thinking "imagine if...". No doubt someone has taken that scenario and made it come to life by developing the Sealander . The Sealander is a caravan that acts as a mobile home that can float on water. Two years in the making, it comes equipped with all the facilities you would expect to find in a normal caravan such as a fully equipped kitchen, coolers, heaters, tables, beds etc. However this one you can back into the water and go fishing out of!  Although the the hull is designed specifically for shallow waters it certainly must be a sign of the times when nothing in the caravan world is sacred. Congratulations to the German company Sealander for breaking the paradigms of land versus water.

Its Getting Hot in Here

The two guys who were responsible for creating Apples iconic iPod design agreed that they wouldn't work in that category again when they left Apple and have since turned their design smarts and applied it to a most unusual product. Tony Fadell and software engineer Matt Rogers have co-founded Nest Labs and in doing so have unveiled the Nest Learning Thermostat, a device incorporating the stylish user friendly approach of the iPod only on a programmable thermostat. Its sleek, cool and all features seem to work seamlessly together. You'll see many of the iconic iPod functions wrapped into this thermostat. Their idea was to make the traditional ugly thermostat that was in millions of homes into a sleek digital display that people would be happy to show off. We are particularly impressed that style can be applied to a household product that was mostly ignored because they thought it was the ugly duckling. This just goes to show that if your thinking is right you can apply it to anything. The Nest Learning Thermostat is definitely worth checking out on YouTube.

Many thanks to our Espresso readers who are getting into the spirit and sharing the non- stop innovations of shipping containers. We were recently sent a story about the jails at Mt Gambier where the South Australian Corrections Minister has announced that shipping containers will now be used as the cells. Shipping container prison cells have been introduced after the government was forced to cancel its plans to build a new prison because of budget constraints. No doubt someone had read The Espresso and saw what was currently doing in retail, housing, food and education and decided they would add prisons to the list. The humble shipping container has come a long way in the last 12 months as The Espresso has followed it's exciting journey.

Cafe Gossip

A newspaper in Winnipeg, Canada has unique approach to getting the news from the street. They have opened up their own cafe where three of their staff work full time in the hope that they can truly engage with their readers and get the real word on the street. The cafe is fully set up with branding for the Winnipeg Free Press Newspaper and has a menu of locally sourced organic dishes, the difference being that sitting in the corner are reporters. This gives us access to journalists, editors and reporters and from the newspapers point of view it has direct access to the feelings, comments and beliefs of their readers. An interesting concept and a great initiative to trail.

Really Fast Food

Perfect. They are making it even easier to buy junk food. The UBox app enables you to pay for snacks at vending machines using your iPhone and even awarding a 10 percent discount if you use it. Recently inveiled in China the new UBox mobile app for Android, iPhone and Java based phones allows you to buy products when you have no change at hand. Soon you'll just have to think about it and a can of Coke and a pack of crisps will magically appear in your hand.
