Letter From the Editor - Edition 100

Cracked the Ton

It's a pretty exciting week here at The Espresso as we publish our 100th edition of the 'Newspaper for Thinkers'. What has been very evident is that this paper has struck a chord with thinkers all over the world...but its not for everyone. It's for those people who want to think differently, challenge the status quo, demand more from their life and want to push the boundaries to see what's possible.  It is for those who want stimulation and a new angle to make things better, different, more productive, faster or just a little cooler. We have been overwhelmed by the response to The Espresso and humbled by the contributions made from people of all walks of life from across the globe to help not only themselves but others to think differently. When we started The Espresso it was purely a 3 minute read on a Wednesday morning to get people to stop momentarily and just ponder. To think 'what if', 'that's cool', 'how would I'? or 'I wonder if we could'? That was it, pure and simple. We love your feedback, we love your ideas, we love the improvements you have suggested and we especially love it when we give somebody the impetus to challenge the way things are today. As a way of saying "thank you!", we have a freebie for you.... It's a two hour audio book that you can listen to on your iPhone/iPad/iPod or any other device. It's called the Mojo Files and was produced by myself and the team at Voodoo Sound who do amazing audio books and production in general. We hope you like the Mojo Files. It's the next step on from Who Stole My Mojo? and it's designed to kick-start every aspect of your world, your work life, your personal life, your family life to just give you an extra bit of Mojo. Its our gift to you, so please download it, have a listen, enjoy and don't forget to shoot through your thoughts and feedback. Once again thanks for subscribing and if there are other people out there in the world who you know might appreciate the chance to think differently...then spread the word!

Technology

Digital Beetle Mania

Hewlett Packard and Paul McCartney's media company MPL have decided to digitise, organise and catalogue the vast personal collections of Paul McCartney and put it out there into "the Cloud". McCartney himself said "You know over the years you amass so much stuff. I've got recordings, photographs, Linda's photographs and that's just the start. Below my old recording studio we have an old basement that contains all my old stuff". Recently The Espresso  reported on a business which is allowing people to store valuable assets in the cloud. With all the recent bizarre weather and spate of natural disasters it makes you think about all those valuable assets we have lying around that could so easily be gone forever. The HP project is surely a commercial version of what each of us may look at in terms of storing our memories and collectables in "the Cloud". It is an amazing website to check out and it should stir the imagination of every business and every individual as to ways of securing our most valuable assets, our memories.

Retail

All Boxed Up

The Espresso has reported on the myriad of different uses for shipping containers. We have seen cafe's, retail outlets and now a shopping centre. BoxPark is the worlds first shopping centre designed using only shipping containers. Due to open in Shoreditch, an area of the UK later this year, the entire BoxPark shopping precinct will be made from shopping containers. The area which is already known for its creatives will see a pop-up shopping centre with tenants ranging from artists, independent retailers, start-ups and young fashion designers to create an eclectic creative hub which is sure to find a market. Driven by some idealistic entrepreneurs, this certainly is going to create a brand new category in retail. With 40 shipping containers on the ground floor and 20 on the first level, these one-offs are going to create a lot of talk in the industry and is just the sort of thing that opinion leaders and the cool fashion pack will find and talk about. We can't wait to see what these guys build using the simple shipping container.

Fashion

The Virtual Parade

We have all sat and watched the social pages broadcast pictures of the most popular and beautiful celebrities in the front row at some of the world's top fashion shows. Now a Singapore-based website gives you virtual front row seats at the best fashion events from Asia. FashForward  will give you exposure to the high-end fashion parades that previously were only for the well heeled. Currently the site allows you access to watch the fashion parades but it's believed that later this year there will be an E-Commerce facility attached to the back of it allowing you to make purchases as you go. The site will also carry footage from behind the scenes. You may or may not be excited by the Asian fashion on parade but this idea is no doubt going to spread as brands like Gucci and Burberry get on board.

More Gaga

Polaroid Goes Gaga

The Espresso reported some months back on the appointment of Lady Gaga and her creative team to the role of creative director for Polaroid . It was announced that Gaga and her team would be putting their innovative hats on in order to try and rejuvenate the Polaroid brand. CES2011 announced that the Grey Label line by Gaga would feature an instant camera, sunglasses that can shoot and display videos and an instant mobile printer. We can report that the mobile printer is now available at Bloomingdale's flagship store in New York. The Gaga project is expected to be rolled out soon and will be a true test of the power of celebrity and a real 'robber hits the road' for Gaga and the creative team behind her to see whether they can rejuvenate the Polaroid brand through their own innovation. The tiny printer uses Polaroid's second generation zinc (zero ink) to give you small 3x4 inch prints that are apparently smudge proof, water resistant and look good.

Advertising

Androids Take Over the Station

Avid Espresso reader and contributor Robert Morman from Hunting With Pixels sent through this really cool idea from telecommunications company HTC. Called an 'invasion of android robots', HTC planted thousands of little robots on the floor of a Belgian train station. Its all part of a HTC advertising campaign but it's a stunt thats certainly caught our eye. We can only imagine the crap that the innovators of this idea had to face when the OH&S people at HTC freaked out about putting androids on the floor of a busy railway station. A mere technicality.
