Letter From the Editor - Edition 37

Does Your Brand have the Vibe?

There is no doubt that the face of brand globally is changing. Trends driven by consumers and customers are changing how brand managers, marketing managers, CEO's and entrepreneurs need to look at and handle their brands. For the last 10 years I've been doing key note addresses to some of the best known brands both here and overseas, and in doing so, I've collected a bunch of stories, anecdotes and examples of how the great brands are building a true vibe around their organisation. Today more than ever, you can't just have a logo to bang on the side of a box or at the top of an invoice to know who to pay. Today you must own a perception. You must separate yourself, own a perception, be doing something for the community, the planet or others. You've got to be generous and in doing so you'll build your tribe. All this plus more are covered off in my own typically straight forward but practical approach to marketing and brand in my new book called The Vibe. Others have called it the marketing handbook for every company of every size of every service or industry. The Vibe hits bookstores and the airport this week, so if you really want to give your brand the Vibe, grab a copy. Today a lot of companies have brands with either no vibe or a bad vibe, but they naturally aspire to have a great vibe. This book will lead the way. Click the link below to check out The Vibe

A Big Break For Innovation

You can imagine the scene. A member of Casttoo, a Colorado firm, lying in bed staring at the cast holding together a broken limb. And then the thought, "I could do something with that!"  This is probably where the tattoo like decal concept came from that transforms unsightly orthopaedic eyesores into graphic works of art. Available in a wide variety of designs based on themes including creatures, tribal images, sports and holidays, Casttoo decals are crafted from an adhesive film that fuses with the plaster cast in seconds when blasted with a hot air dryer. Through a partnership with 3M, Casttoo offers starter kits for clinics and hospitals including customised logos of 100 decals in a variety of sizes. International shipping is available as are customised designs. Consumers can even send Casttoo a digital file of their X-ray for conversion into an on-cast decal. Is there nothing that can't be innovated?

A Brand New Advertisement Model

When New York model Tanaya decided to do something different for global brands, she created a new category and certainly a lot of attention. Tanaya said, "Companies such as Estee Lauder, Loreal and Lucky Jeans have hired me for thousands of dollars a day to help promote their brands, but I'm offering that service to you for a fraction of the cost". The idea is that you buy a date on Tanaya's calendar and in return she will wear your t-shirt. She'll wear your t-shirt and commit to doing a professional photo shoot wearing your tee, write a blog post about how kick ass your company is and talk about you to all her online friends. She is for sale 365 days a year. The first day of the year is $1, the 2nd of Jan is $2, the 3rd is $3 etc. At the time of writing this, March was almost sold out. It's pretty amazing that someone can become a human billboard and get paid for it. There is a lot of quirky thinking in this and well worth your while checking out her site by clicking the link below.

Now that's what I call an i-Pod dock

If you like your music loud, then the i-Pod party speaker is a must for you. Made from heavy duty aluminium and sitting on a two wheeled base with a retractable handle, this 22 watt mobile speaker system will blast out your tunes no matter where you are. It comes with a mains cable and internal rechargeable battery that gives you 12 hours of play. You can plug in any i-Pod, CD or mp3 players as well as musical instruments. If you are so inclined there is also a jack for a microphone so you can DJ or sing along to your favourite party tracks or just shout at people. Something every busker working in front of Crazy Johns on a Saturday morning should have.

Retail

Subscription Only

The death of the print industry has long been heralded, but a number of companies have been quick to adapt to the changing climate. Employing the 'mystery' approach that is currently in vogue, Stack is a London based company offering subscriptions of six, eight or twelve issues of physical magazines to subscribers each year. The issues are chosen by Stack from a healthy roster of independant periodical publications, and are sorted for the reader by their quality and impact.
